What It Is

The South Node (also called Ketu in Vedic astrology) is the point exactly opposite the North Node — the place where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic as the Moon moves southward. It is always in the sign and house directly opposite the North Node, forming a polarity axis that describes the karmic journey of the soul.

While the North Node points forward — toward new growth and unfamiliar development — the South Node points backward. It represents what has already been mastered: the familiar, the instinctive, the place of ease and comfort. In karmic frameworks, it describes qualities and patterns developed in past lives or early childhood that now come naturally but may have become a trap of over-reliance.

The South Node is not "bad." The gifts it represents are real. The problem arises when the familiar comfort of the South Node becomes an excuse to avoid the growth the North Node is calling for.

The South Node's energy is deeply familiar — almost automatic. Activities and ways of being associated with it require little effort. The challenge is that what comes easily can become a crutch.
